Sanctus charity moving to new home

Sanctus is a charity based on Broomfield Road in Chelmsford and the only day centre serving the homeless and vulnerable in a significant part of Essex. We are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We have remained operational throughout the pandemic, and despite being a charity, we have been deemed an essential service.

Our basic service is to provide daily free food and drinks to those in need. We also distribute clothes, tents, sleeping bags, toiletries, and other essential items. In addition to this, we have a range of support services which are completed in our “Hub”, including, 1-2-1 mentoring, assistance with gaining housing and sustaining tenancies, furnishing homes, addiction and mental health support, and a range of advice and advocacy services. All again offered for free. We work with some of the most marginalised people in our community who feel comfortable to come to us to ask for help, meaning we can make sure that they access the support they need. Our aim is to prevent homelessness by supporting individuals to take positive steps forward.

Sanctus has been operating successfully since 2012 and year on year the demand for our services has increased and we now support an evolving client base of 200-250 people. With the COVID-19 outbreak our numbers have risen fast.  These services will soon become further stretched based on the mental, social and financial impact of the pandemic. For this reason, we are moving to a new building (30-32 Broomfield Road, Chelmsford, CM1 1SW) which is 3x the size of our current premises.

This building will allow us to extend our services which are at the heart of the support system in Chelmsford, facilitating a multi-organisational approach to tacking homelessness and other vulnerabilities. Our extended services will include more work with those suffering from social isolation, mental health and domestic abuse through in-house and externally integrated services, who are provided space in the building. It will form a huge part in the recovery programme to support individuals who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

This is a massive challenge for us but only by taking on the pandemic head on can we be part of the solutions that are so desperately needed. Thanks to supporters we have secured the lease and the refurbishment is underway. We are aiming to open to the public early summer 2021, but there is still a lot to do to get us ready for this move.

If you are local to us, Sanctus is a service that helps the vulnerable people you see every day on the street that so many people wonder how they can help. It is a service that saves lives.

Sanctus is an independently run charity that operates based on support from businesses, individuals, sponsored events, charitable trusts, successful bids and support from statutory bodies. Without donations, Sanctus would not be able to open.
