From the 1 April 2021 the Government introduced a number of one-off Restart Grants. The Council have followed this approach with changes made to its own Additional Restrictions Grant scheme, following an urgent decision by the Leader of the Council.
Additional Restrictions Grant scheme
The eligibility criteria has not changed from earlier phases of the scheme but one-off grants of up to £5k are now available to businesses who have been severely impacted by the COVID 19 pandemic where they have not been able to access support under other Government grant schemes.
In addition to the above, Businesses can still access support under the following two Government grant schemes:
Local Restrictions Support Grant (CLOSED)
This grant scheme was introduced last year and is available to those businesses who were legally required to close during periods of local or national restrictions and occupy a rated property. Earlier phases of the scheme have now come to an end, but businesses can still apply for financial support for the period from 16 February 2021 to 31 March 2021 (Cycle 2).
The Government have introduced this new scheme from 1 April 2021. Payments under this scheme can only be made to businesses who occupy a property within the rating list and are the named business ratepayer.
There is no need for business to apply if they have already received support under earlier phases of the ‘closed’ scheme above as grant payments will be made automatically.
For new applicants, the deadline to apply for the Cycle 2 period set out within the Closed scheme is 31 May 2021, however if only applying for a Restart Grant, the Government have set an deadline of 30 June 2021.

A spokesperson for TDC says applying for these grants is quick and easy:
“The support is there and applications only take 10-15 minutes of your time, all you need at hand are copies of recent bank statements along with trading accounts or equivalent.
“We want to provide as much support as we can to our local businesses, which we know have been struggling as lockdowns continue, this is part of our Back to Business agenda.
In terms of the Additional Restrictions Grant Scheme, this is not restricted to just those who occupy property on the rating list as we want to be able to help as many businesses as possible. With that in mind we have also made the application process as simple as we can and there is no need to register on our website to access the on-line form. We have also opened up the scheme to include all types of businesses operating in Tendring. For example, we have already been able to provide support to self-employed hairdressers, driving instructors and fitness instructors along with taxi drivers.
There is no need for business to apply if they have already received support under earlier phases of the scheme as grant payments will be made automatically during April”
